Nipton, California. Population: 20.
Originally an old mining town, Nipton is set to become the country’s “first energy-independent, cannabis-friendly hospitality destination”. Recently purchased by American Green Inc., a marijuana focused technology and growing firm based in Arizona. The reported price: $5 Million.
American Green says it will initially be focused on bottling cannabis-infused water in the town. The production of marijuana edibles and the cultivation of cannabis won’t be far behind in American Green’s 18-month, $2.5 million development time frame.
American Green Inc., a publicly-traded company whose businesses include age-verifying cannabis vending machines, cannabis-oriented apps, and a culivation facility in Phoenix. It wants Nipton, a near-ghost town in San Bernardino County with a population of only a few dozen, to eventually offer an array of pot-friendly tourist attractions
“We are excited to lead the charge for a true Green Rush,” David Gwyther, American Green’s president and CEO
An artist-in-residence program is in the works, as are plans for extensive eco-tourism initiatives. The company will also expand a nearby solar farm with the intent of making Nipton energy independent while also upgrading the town’s water aquifer and water delivery systems.
David Gwyther, chairman and president of American Green, said in a statement, “We are excited to lead the charge for a true ‘Green Rush.’ The cannabis revolution that’s going on here in the US, has the power to completely revitalize communities in the same way gold did during the 19th century.”.
When asked what her husband would think of the buyers’ plans to turn Nipton into the pot paradise of the California desert, she laughed wholeheartedly.
“I think he would find a lot of humor in that,” she said, mentioning that as a Libertarian, Freeman had no problem with people using marijuana, and as a proponent of green power he’d be all in favor of energy independence. Over the years he’d installed a solar farm himself that provides much of the tiny town’s electricity.
